Animal Adaptation – First and Second Grade- Science K-2
Polar Bears have thick fur to keep them warm in the North Pole.
Polar Bear’s white fur allows him to blend in with its environment, which is called camouflage.
Camouflage is used by the predators and by the prey. Predators use camouflage
to sneak up on their prey, while prey uses camouflage to escape predators.
Can you see a lizard in this picture?
Some animals, such as cats, are nocturnal, which means that they are awake during the night and asleep during the day.
Nocturnal animals have large eyes and see very well at night, much better than humans.
Some times, animals adapt to changing seasons by migrating to warmer climates.
Most of us think of birds, when we think of animal migration.
Perhaps, you did not know that Monarch Butterflies migrate every fall from Ontario, Canada to Mexico.
Yet, some animals adapt to their environment with color.
Did you know that ladybugs bright colors let their predators know, “Hey, don’t eat me, I am poisonous!”
Finally, when the winter comes, and there is not much, many animals hibernate. When we say that animals hibernate, it means that they sleep through the winter.
